Our promise to you

Traceable sourcing and traceable science. Know what’s in your product, where it comes from, and why it works.

When I was pregnant, I started looking for a prenatal multivitamin. What I found were questionable ingredients and sketchy science, basically, an entire industry built on the assumption that women wouldn’t ask too many questions.

So I built Ritual, because I believe that women deserve to know what they’re putting in their bodies, and why. We go out of our way to provide proof that our products are safe and effective, through third-party testing, clinical studies, and patented delivery technology.

Some call it obsessive-ness, we call it traceability.

Dr. Nima Alamdari, PhD — Chief Scientific Officer

In our formulation we begin with the human body, working with leading doctors, scientists, and researchers to solve for product composition and delivery. We then conduct clinical trials on our finished formulas to measure, and publish, our results.

This isn’t rocket science. But it is real, validated science — and it’s how we ensure our products work hard for women, in each new stage of their lives.

Our radical idea: supplements should work.

Not all clinical studies are equal. Our “clinically proven” means human studies on our finished formulas to actually measure impact, not just make claims. Here’s how we’re raising the bar on clinical evidence:

  1. Pre-registered study plans & outcomes

Upfront trial registration makes studies more transparent and trustworthy. Find all of our trials on ClinicalTrials.gov.

  2. Independently led studies

Our independent research partners provide expert collaboration and help ensure objectivity, even with industry funding.

  3. Thoughtful, inclusive participation

We set criteria to ensure study participants reflect real users, and an independent IRB reviews each study plan for safety.

  4. Transparent, controlled results

We plan a study’s sample size via power analysis and compare results to controls to reduce bias and detect real effects.

  5. Peer-reviewed results & publication

Completing a study isn’t the end. We share results at conferences and pursue peer-reviewed publication to help validate our methods and conclusions.

  6. Advocacy for change

Clinical findings help support our advocacy work to push for updated nutrient guidance and safer heavy metal limits for supplements.

How to Evaluate a Clinical Study

We believe you shouldn’t need a PhD to understand what “clinically studied” means.

Use this checklist to decode a trial and assess if the results are likely to be trustworthy.

Red Flags (Signs to be Skeptical)

Product image

No study pre-registration in a clinical study database

Product image

Study is company-run without independent oversight

Product image

Unclear methodology that leaves questions about how a study was conducted

Product image

No control or placebo group

Product image

Vague descriptions of the treatment

Product image

Emphasis on statistical trends instead of clear between-group differences

Product image

No conference presentation of results, peer-reviewed publication, or clear plan to share results

Methods: How Was the Study Done?

Study Registration

Is the study pre-registered in a database of clinical research studies (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov with an NCT number)?

Does the published study appear to follow the original plan?

Who Participated

Was there clear inclusion criteria (who was allowed in)?

Was there clear exclusion criteria (who was left out)?

Can you tell who the results apply to?

Study Design

Are there two or more groups (e.g., treatment and control/placebo)?

Were participants randomly assigned to groups?

Were participants blinded (did they not know which treatment they received)?

Were researchers blinded, if possible?

Treatment Details

Is the treatment clearly described (what it was, how much, how often, how long)?

Is the control or placebo clearly described?

Did all groups receive similar care except for the treatment being tested?

Study Size

Do the authors report a power analysis?

Does the study include enough participants to detect meaningful differences?

Results: What Did the Study Find?

Between-Group Comparisons

Did the authors compare outcomes between the treatment and control groups?

Are improvements greater in the treatment group than in the control group?

Statistical Significance

Are results statistically significant (e.g., p < 0.05 or p < 0.01)?

Are confidence intervals reported?

What Not to Over-Interpret

Are results more than just baseline or within-group changes?

Do the authors avoid overstating results based on placebo effects?

The term “clinically studied” is used a lot, but not all clinical studies are created equal.

In fact, there is no regulated definition of the term “clinically studied” for dietary supplements in the US.

Act Now

Glossary of Clinical Terms

Key Study Terms

Intervention

The thing being tested (like a new drug, device, or therapy). In this context, it’s the Ritual product being tested. Sometimes referred to as “the treatment”.

Control Group

The group that does not get the treatment and is used for comparison. Depending on ethics, they may get an “active control,” which could be the standard treatment, another product on the market, or a placebo.

Placebo

A “dummy treatment” (sometimes called a sugar pill) that has no real effect, used to see if the new treatment works better than nothing.

Randomization

Assigning people by chance to different groups (treatment vs. control), to keep the study fair.

Blinding (Masking)

When participants and/or researchers don’t know who’s getting which treatment, to help avoid bias. Note: “Double blind” means that neither the participants nor the researchers know which treatment the participants are getting.

Informed Consent

The process where participants are told all the details (risks, benefits, what to expect) before deciding to join.

Principle Investigator (PI)

The lead researcher responsible for running the study safely and correctly.

ClinicalTrials.gov

A U.S. government website that provides information on clinical studies being done around the world. You can search for trials by condition, treatment, or location.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

A group of independent experts that reviews research studies to make sure they’re ethical and participants are protected.

Research Bias

When results of a study are unfairly influenced by the way it was designed, conducted, or interpreted, instead of showing the true effect.

Data Analysis Terminology

p-value

A number that helps show whether the results of a study are likely real or could have happened by chance. A smaller p-value (like < 0.05) usually means the result is considered “statistically significant.”

Statistical Significance

Indicates the study results are unlikely to have occurred by chance alone (often when p < 0.05), but it doesn’t mean the effect is large or important.

Power (Statistical Power)

The likelihood that a study will detect a real effect, if it exists. Higher power means a better chance of avoiding a false negative (missing a real effect). See power analysis below.

Power Analysis

A planning step researchers do before a study starts to figure out how many participants need to be in the study. The goal is to have a large enough study to spot a real difference, if one exists, and not miss it because the study was too small. Researchers often aim for an ~80% chance of detecting a real effect and use a standard cutoff (often 0.05) to decide whether a result is likely due to chance.

Publication & Results Sharing

Manuscript

A written draft of a scientific paper that describes research findings, usually submitted to a journal for possible publication.

Peer Review

The process in which other experts in the field check a scientific manuscript before it is published, to ensure the research is valid and meets quality standards.

Abstract

A short summary of a research study, usually highlighting the study objective, methods, key findings, and conclusions.

Poster Presentation

A way of sharing research at a conference using a large printed poster with text, graphs, and images that summarize the study. Researchers stand by it to discuss findings and answer questions from conference attendees.

Academic Conference

A professional meeting where researchers present their work (through talks, posters, or panels) and exchange ideas with others in the field.

Study & Research Types

Clinical Trial

Also known as a “Clinical Study.” A research study where people are given a treatment, procedure, or behavior change to test if it’s safe and works. Clinical trials can differ in design with some being more prone to bias and others, like RCTs (defined below), being more rigorous.

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs)

A type of clinical trial in which participants are randomly assigned to different groups (e.g., treatment vs. placebo). This reduces bias and is considered the “gold standard” for testing interventions.

Observational Study

A study where researchers just watch and measure health outcomes without giving a specific treatment.

Animal Study

Research that tests new treatments or ideas in animals, often before trying them in humans, to see if they might be safe or effective.

In Vitro Research

Experiments done outside of a living body, usually in test tubes or petri dishes (e.g., testing cells in a lab).

Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of RCTs

Studies that combine results from many randomized controlled trials on the same topic. A systematic review carefully collects and evaluates all high-quality studies. A meta-analysis uses statistics to pool the results, giving a stronger overall conclusion.

Mechanistic Studies

Research (often lab-based) that explores how something works biologically. For example, how a bioactive ingredient affects cells or chemical pathways.
